The English kids have been so busy mining the '80s for post-punk, they've forgotten all about its post-funk. We speak of the artist occasionally known as Prince, of course--and this Essex group means to bring him back to the pop fore. Fine tenor croons and itchy drums do the trick nicely.
MAGISTRATES are a young band from the Essex section of Britain and they have been pretty buzzy over there. XL Recordings will release a full-length album by them in early 2009. They have some catchy influences too, which you can figure out yourself once you listen, but they have come up with a pretty distinctive sound.
Check out "Make This Work" by these adorable young Brits, and your weekend will be off to a great start! It will have your head shaking and you'll probably be singing along before the chorus even comes in!
Within these ordinary surroundings, the hugely ambitious Magistrates are making extraordinary music. They're as likely to cite Prince and Michael Jackson as influences as they are Talking Heads and Bowie and they've taken the best bits from these most glittering of inspirations and come up with something truly distinctive and original.
