Features

Publisher's description of R-Drive Image 2.0

From R-tools Technology:

R-Drive Image creates disk-image files for backup or duplication purposes. A disk-image file contains an exact, byte-by-byte copy of a hard drive, partition, or logical disk and can be created with various compression levels on the fly without stopping Windows OS. These files then can be stored in a variety of places, including removable media. R-Drive Image is capable of restoring those images on the original disks, on any other partition, or even on a hard drive's free space. The program creates a special bootable diskette for restoring a system partition.

To restore only certain files from a disk image, you can connect the image as a virtual disk and copy those files directly from the disk image using Windows Explorer or any other file utility. Version 2.0 adds USB 2.0 support in the pseudo-graphic mode. You can now restart to the pseudo-graphic mode directly from Windows to restore data to the system and other locked partitions. The 15-day trial version allows you to verify all R-Drive Image capabilities except creation and restoration of a disk image when R-Drive Image is launched from a bootable floppy disk created by the trial version.

"Back up your system before you touch it!"

by Phantomito on February 28, 2005

    Pros: ZULCH!!!

Cons: I tired Disc-Disc copy according to the given instructions. The program restarted the PC only to go into an unheard of ?GRAU?option and I had no idea what to do next. The program installed this as a primary boot option with Windows XP as a secondary option and I had to choose between the two each time I tried to reboot my PC. I must say that suppport was very quick to reply saying I should have continued at the GRAU option (but without saying how) and I could edit the SYSTEM.INI to get rid of the booting problem because uninstalling the program didn't help at all. Is this what is called user friendly?

"Didn't find it very useful -- plus it could be dangerous."

    by JayJay000 on June 27, 2005

Pros: Nice GUI and its easy to make images. (I admit I didn't have the guts to restore any images, though. See cons, below.)

Cons: The UNREGISTERED version was unable to create either boot floppies or boot CDs in my system. I was assured by Tech Support that the 15-day trial version could do both. They provided another software build that also failed to create boot discs. It would not possible to do a rescue if I lost Windows and didn't have any boot discs to launch the program. This program would be useless to me in a crunch.

Also, when I used the vendor's UNINSTALL feature, it immediately hammered by BIOS (?!). Fortunately, the BIOS recovered and my computer rebooted, but I got a few more grey hairs in the process. I have no idea what in the world this program was doing in the BIOS. If you unistall R-Drive Image, use some third-party uninstall software to do it -- don't use Windows 'Remove Programs,' because this will automatically launch R-Drive Image's UNINSTALL program, which I consider a virus.

"It comes to backing up and restoring computer data"

by Tipps on May 17, 2005

Pros: For those of you who have lost data on your computer, you know that the rule of thumb is backup, backup, backup. I am focusing on programs that will cost you little, while saving your data, time and peace of mind! One I have used is R-Drive Image which creates disk-image files for backup or duplication purposes. I like R-Drive Image because it allows me to create backup images and store them on hard drives, CDs or USB pocket drives. I can create a disk-image file with various compression levels on the fly without stopping Windows OS. To restore certain files from a disk image, I connect the image as a virtual disk and copy those files directly from the disk image using Windows Explorer. I could restore all of my data without complications.

Cons: Easy to use for those with some technical experience.
