Publisher's description of OpenOffice.org (Intel)
From OpenOffice.org:This office productivity suite for Mac OS X includes desktop applications such as a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation manager, and a drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to that of other office suites. OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office.
Note: In order to use OpenOffice, you first have to download and install the latest build of X11 from Apple. See Apple's page on X11 for information and download links. This is a very large file and may take several hours to download via dial-up modem.
Version 3 includes unspecified updates.

- "Get productivity for free"
A credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles equations and complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.
The interface is similar to that of MS Office, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OOo, as it's known, lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office formats, PDF, HTML, and XML. It can also import files from those formats, as well as WordPerfect and others. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications.
The latest versions of OpenOffice have seen a spurt of growth in the extensions available for the program. These include templates for professional writers, an export tool for bidirectional functionality with Google Docs, blog publishing, and others. Blog publishing assistance especially strikes us as a natural area for word processing to grow toward.
We were pleased to find that stability has improved too. No doubt about it, the multilingual and crossplatform OpenOffice.org is a compelling option for anyone in search of an alternative office suite.

Version: OpenOffice.org (Intel) 3.0
Pros: Great interface! Opens all MS Office files and can save in MS Office formats--can even set as the default format for all files. The features and tools are excellent. Price is right (free!).
Cons: None, with the release of 3.0. (Note: Have not used the database module enough to comment)
Summary: OpenOffice 3.0 is a true rival to MS Office, and in some aspects is even more powerful. It is fully customizable and the programming is all open-source. I have been using OpenOffice nearly exclusively for more than four years now--I love it!

Version: OpenOffice.org (Intel) 3.0
Pros: Easy to learn and easy to use
Cons: I cannot find anything negative with Open Office
Summary: I used Microsoft Office and lost my copy. I downloaded Open Office and found it just as easy to use. It saved me alot of trouble in learning a new program.

Version: OpenOffice.org (Intel) 3.0
"Open Office is the Office for me!"
Pros: This does everything that I need it to do. I could not see spending the money to upgrade my old MS Office 2000 which was not letting me install it on my laptop. I love OpenOffice, There is no reason to spend the extra dollars which I don't have.
Cons: I haven't had this program very long. So far there are no cons.
-
Version: OpenOffice.org (Intel) 3.0
Pros: It will do everything most offices need and then some. I can't see paying for Microsoft Office for a few items that I'll probably never need.
Cons: A lot of newbies will have difficulty finding how to do some of thing's this suite is capable of. Bento and FileMaker are better and easier databases.
Summary: It does everything I need it to do and at a great price, FREE.

Version: OpenOffice.org (Intel) 3.0
"Miles above previous versions. Better than Office 2008"
Pros: Very easy to use. Conversion from Office files works well. Size of documents half that of Office. Not buggy like Office; works seamlessly with Spaces. Quicklook displays OO docs better than Office docs. Starts and runs fast.
Cons: Would like to see more templates. Not all spreadsheets upload correctly to google docs, but that could be an issue with Google.
Summary: This version is so much better than previous versions. If you have not liked OO in the past, you should try it now. I own Office 2008, but will be selling it now, because OO just works better.
