Publisher's description of Jarte 3.2

From Carolina Road Software:

Jarte is a free, tabbed word processor based on the Microsoft WordPad word processing engine built into Windows. Like WordPad, Jarte is fast starting, easy to use, reliable, requires little screen space, and creates documents perfectly compatible with Word. But Jarte reveals the WordPad engine's true hidden power by adding many features Microsoft never made available in the WordPad program. Jarte can even be run directly from a USB flash drive.

Version 3.2 includes minor enhancements and bug fixes.

  • "Jarte melds style and utility"

The first thing users of this freeware WordPad/Notepad replacement will notice is the unusual interface. Jarte actually uses a simple layout, with a default brushed-metal skin and mouse-over icons that reveal standard Menu bar drop-down menus, but this isn't your basic 1990s UI. Just the mere fact of having something different to look at is appealing, and generally it works well. The icons are a bit small, and there's a fair bit of empty space around them so they look somewhat bereft of context.

It turns out Jarte has two other interface schemes. One is an expanded "classic" layout, while the other is a minimalist and familiar Menubar. Behind these different approaches lies many familiar writing and note-taking tools bolstered by small tweaks that make Jarte's appeal obvious. A mouse-over chart icon gives you word, character, page, and line counts. Table, special character, and equation support make Jarte a good, lightweight editor, but the built-in scalable screen-capping utility push it towards greatness. The included spell-checker was adequate, but not great, although the clipboard can hold 25 items at once. DOC, RTF and TXT formats are supported, and there's an Export tool that converts documents into PDFs and HTML. Like other Notepad replacements, Jarte offers tabs for keeping multiple files open at once.

The stability issues and function failures of previous versions were non-existent in our latest test of Jarte. The clickless, mouse-over-based navigation may sound a bit intimidating, but it makes getting around in the app noticeably fast. If you're in the market for a Notepad or WordPad alternative, Jarte's mix of style and utility is about as different from the mainstream as you can get.

    Version: Jarte 3.2

    "Best Freebie There Is"

by khamma on May 31, 2008

Pros: Speed: No long ho-hum wait. I just type "Jarte" in my handy dandy launcher (Keybreeze) and it appears instantly. Everything it does, it does fast. Wait till you try as screen capture.

Looks: It is customizable. Mine is much prettier than the screenshot shown here. I was easily able to get rid of Times New Roman (aaagghhhh) by changing the default font to one of my own choosing.

Usability: If you have ever used a word processor before, you can use this one. No learning curve. I love tabbed applications. Besides being able to see which documents are open, it makes it much easier to get at the one you want to switch to. With Jarte you don't even have to click on the tab, just run the pointer over the one you want. Type a list, choose sort from the edit menu and the program will sort the list for you. It will make tables, insert hyper-links and it has a spell checker.

There is a lot more. Try it and see for yourself. You have nothing to lose. It is free.

"This is just what I was looking for!"

by sunnyh on August 3, 2008

Pros: I don't like Microsoft Office, which came packed into my new laptop as a trial before purchase. All I wanted was a word processor with the capabilities of saving docs in various formats. You guys did it, and I thank you!! This program is perfect, compact, fast, and reliable. You can't get much better then that, and I'm a writer, so it gets my highest praise...

Well done to the people at Jarte!

"The only word processor you may ever need."

    by gorbad27 on June 30, 2008

Pros: Jarte is proof that simple does not have to mean unintelligent. It puts the power of writing stolen by office-type word processors back into the hands of the artist. Don't be fooled by Free license. And if this freeware version somehow manages to fall short, the cost of the upgrade is entirely worthwhile. My frustrated search is finally over.

"I should have done it years ago!"

by genbaez on June 14, 2008

Pros: I download it about 3 hours ago and I had not being able to crash this application.

Well written, precise, fast, slim(10MB of RAM w/o documents open, just the app & WordWeb online) and even include "Screen Capture" so if you do not have one no worries. This application only uses an additional 17MB of your hard disk space as the WordPad engine is built into the Operating System (OS).

Thanks to Carolina Road Software for this app is tight with a clean interface that will only take you a few minutes to feel familiar and confident how to use it no matter your level of expertise.

    Good writings everyone!

Cons: So far the only weak spot that I have found in the application is the "Screen Capture" as I do use a free and paid version of PrintKey 2000. Given the screen capture is built-in and free, I can only knocked it down half of a star. Otherwise, we all need to use this application instead of the plain "WordPad".
