Publisher's description of J. River Media Center 10.0

From J. River:

This one-stop, media-management application turns any Windows PC into an entertainment hub with complete control over your digital media. It connects your PC to your stereo, TV, remote control device, digital camera, scanner, and portable MP3 player. It plays all media, and it rips, burns, and organizes your music, images, and video. Media Center encodes and plays all popular media formats, and powerful utilities include Media Server for streaming music and images to remote PCs.

New features include the improved graphical Action Window for quick burning, tagging, and handheld syncing; Media Mode buttons for easy navigation; a new layout; and unique 3D visualizations. Other features include three skinnable modes; a visualization studio; CD and DVD burning (audio, video, and data); encoding (MP3, WMA, OGG, and APE formats); TV recording and instant replay; image organization and tagging; music and image slide shows; iPod support; a CD labeler; a DSP and EQ studio; a file-tagging studio; and TiVo HMO support.

  • "A full-blown multimedia powerhouse"
Boasting an attractive interface and an extensive feature set, J. River Media Center leads the pack of media browsers. The installation takes some time, but it's time well spent. The program's appeal is apparent even during installation, when you can select a variety of program skins, from Blue Steel to Z. Moreover, you can choose a small or a large interface, depending on how much space you'd like the program to occupy on your desktop. Upon launch, J. River Media Center automatically ferrets out media files on your PC and lets you preview details such as resolution, production date, and size. Toggling full-screen views or starting a comprehensive slide show is a mere click away. We were impressed with the program's ability to browse all sorts of media, including photos, videos, and audio files, without relying on external players. Some of J. River Media Center's many powers include the ability to burn, rip, and play CDs; to generate playlists; to record sound; and to create disc labels. To boot, the program even comes with a TV tuner. Media junkies with high standards will wonder how they did without J. River Media Center for so long.

    "Media Center is Amazing!!!"

    by ahbrown41 on March 4, 2005

Pros: Forget the previous reviewer, I think Media Center is amazing and has great support! I have a huge collection of MP3, AAC and OGG files and MC has been a huge help in all areas. It is really I one stop shop. With MC I:

    1) Tag manage and organize all of my music and photo files.

    2) Synchronize my music with my MP3 player.

    3) Stream my music and photos to my Tivo. The new version will probably even support HME!! It even transcodes my OGG and AAC files so my Tivo can play them!!

    4) Stream my music to my laptop via the amazing built in music streamer that can also transcode and downsample the music for slower connections.

Truly it keeps going on and on. The new version MC 11 is really amazing and stable. I would suggest purchasing that version as that is an option.

Support has always been very responsive for me. Usually not more than an hour until a response. No problem at all there.

This product really puts all others in the dust. I have searched long and hard for a product like this believe me!

Cons: Well any issues have been resolved by the developers as they are very very responsive.

    "try MediaMonkey instead"

by Antiware on February 4, 2005

Pros: 1) multitude of useful features 2) mp3 sync 3) skinnable via winamp skins 4) handles 500+ mp3s nicely

Cons: 1) Horrible e-mail support, bias forum support 2) Buggy/Crashes on ocassion 3) Pay $, one should at least get some personal support like other companies i.e. Nero, IPSwitch 4) MediaMonkey offers the same features but with a nicer smoother easier-to-use interface and also does a better job in organziation of mp3s 5) MediaMonkey is free? and this is not? 6) MediaMonkey has better support? and this does not? 7) Sucks overall so go for something else, we should all boycott J. River for their ignorance towards customers

    "A cool, solid Media Player."

by Murxidon on March 21, 2005

Pros: The player has a slylish design and multiple skins, (you can download more off the website), it plays most media types and has some cool visualisations, it also has a "theatre" option where it turns your desktop into a complete media "showroom", and can't fail to impress.

Cons: Doesn't have many cons, it's easy to use and stable, but changing Skins can cause it to crash
