Overcoming iPhone envy

iPods

Is your iPod feeling abandoned?

(Credit: CNET Networks)

If your iPod is turning green with envy or blue with neglect from the incessant roar over Apple's iPhone (check our nerve center for the latest news, reviews, and apps), it may be time to revisit the programs that made you and your iPod inseparable until now.

Seth Rosenblatt's collection of best iPodware includes iGadget, the ultimate iPod data-syncing and management utility; MediaMonkey, a hit jukebox; and the Plato Video to iPod Converter, which makes your iPod video-ready.

Wedge in those headphones deep enough; crank up the volume loud enough, and you may never even hear all that iPhone trumpeting. Just don't forget to comment below on your favorite iPod software.

I still have one of those fat screens (CRT)! I guess I'm just one of those people who gets comfy and doesn't explore too often. I don't even have a cell phone or a laptop! This way, I don't have to worry about whatever they come up with that's new. lol.

Yes, I do this on purpose. I know myself, and I would want it. lol. I already have too much to carry!

Thank you so much for your wonderful program. I just downloaded it today. The only problem I can see so far is that it interferes with my Norton. (That's not too hard to do. I hate norton!) Have a wonderful week!

for the antivirus...

Hi, I just want to notice you that "trend micro pc-cillin internet security" is my all-time best antivirus : there is NO problem with him even if I don't always look what's in free software. If there is a virus, I "don't care" because he "takes care of it!!!"

p.s. I use the version 2006 and there's daily upgrade ALWAYS

My iPod & I are Still Inseparable

The truth is that as much hype as the iPhone has coming its way, I already have an iPod & I already have a phone. And I will advocate such programs as "Plato Video to iPod Converter" but there are alternatives such as "Any Video Converter" and others. I love having videos on my iPod, but I've learned that putting full movies or TV episodes normally isn't worth it - but this doesn't mean that I can't carry around my favorite music videos with me at all times. What I'm saying is that the iPod is still my favorite mp3 player out there, and I've even convinced both my siblings and my Mom to get their own.

Viva iPod!

i don't need an Iphone
by dfstulac July 3, 2007 1:20 PM PDT
ladies and gentlemen:

While I know many of you have I pods and cell phones. I have a Motorola SLVR. this is both a sleek cell phone and an itunes player. While frequently use the cell phone, I don't use the itunes player(don't find it usefull compared to my mp3 player). Additionally, I don't use the other features either. (text web multimedia) These features are just another way to seperate you from your money!

I have studied the iphone compared it SLVR, and found the iphone comparable. Don't get me wrong the touch screen is cool, but the phone is too big.

In my overall estimation I would prefer a much smaller basic phone. Lose the camera, e-mail ipod/mp3, etc. features.

Hope this is helpfull.

I am the proud owner of a 4G IPHONE
by lola1107 July 3, 2007 1:37 PM PDT
I had no plans to buy a IPHONE. Quite satisfied with my pda and my ipod.
And for all the criticism by those who do not own one. I am sorry. Save up for the next edition because its worth every penney to own such a beautiful piece of equipment. It's history in the making and we are part of it. I am estatic because I didn't waste my money.

ITunes help for Linda1018
by rcapriles July 3, 2007 6:09 PM PDT
Lana:

Your Apple software is very sensitive. My initial suggestion is to remove your ITunes software. Then using Windows search look for anything to do with Apple (that is related to your ITunes program)or ITunes and delete them. Restart your computer and re-install the original software. That should take care of the problem.

Hi, Lana1018.

If you are experiencing trouble with iTunes, I suggest that you uninstall it from your computer and install a different media player to use for synchronizing your iPod. For that i highly recommend Winamp. Download it here:

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Winamp_5_Full/1066336873/1

This is the basic 'full' version. When you are installing it be sure to tick off only the components you need under "choose components". I assume that you have no experience with Winamp, therefore I'll suggest a setup for you. It's the same as the setup I use ;):

Under "Choose Components" during the Winamp Setup, a lot is ticked off by default. I'd recommend you to remove the tick in "Winamp Agent" and under "Winamp Library" remove the tick in "Replay Gain Analysis Tool", "Winamp Dashboard" and "Online Media". Under "Core Media Library Components" remove the tick in "Local Media", "Bookmarks", "History" and "Now Playing". Under "Portable Media Player Support" be sure that everything IS ticked off. Now you'll have a slim install with only the features you basically need. Of course if there are any settings that you disagree with, you change them to whatever you want ;). This is just the way I set it up.

After it's installed launch Winamp and under Media Library select "Playlists" and "New". Type the name of your new playlist (For example "iPod playlist"). Now under "Playlists" select your new playlist and "Add". Then you add for example a folder on your computer where you have your music/video files stored. When you've added your files, select "Playlist Editor", "File", "Open playlist from Media Library" and select your playlist. Now you can play music on your computer. To use Winamp with your iPod, simply connect it to your computer WHILE Winamp is running and select "Yes" when prompted "Is this a portable media player you want to manage with Winamp?" and you're set to go!

If you are an experienced user I apologize for the overly detailed instruction, but I had to assume that you didn't know the stuff. Hope this reply was for some help to you.

Regards,

Landsnes
ipod problem
by jnbawd July 4, 2007 3:21 PM PDT
My daughter's $350 AUD ipod had a problem after only 3 months. Did not switch on. She phoned Apple, explained the problem and was given a reference number and address to send it to, which she did. A week later a packing box arrived to send the ipod. Daughter phoned Apple & explained she had already sent it. They claim not to have received it. Subsequent phone calls over 3 months was same answer. She has given up on ipod, bought a Sansa MP3 which she is now enjoying.
iPod Unusable Until iTunes Data Normalized
by MikeCopeland July 3, 2007 3:12 PM PDT
I have an iPod, and I'm using iTunes (7.1). However, I can't populte my iPod until I remove the duplicates in the iTunes library that was built when I installed iTunes. When that happend, iTunes csanned my entire system...and found all the files that are on my external HD that's my backup system. Now, everything in my iTunes library is duplicated, and I can't find any way to remove the files on my J: drive - if I could do just that, I'd have a clean 1-copy library from where I could populate my iPod. Any thoughts? TIA

duplicate files in your iTunes Library can become a problem after you consolidate your music library...here's my hint/work-around [it works so I stopped looking for another solution but there may be a more 'elegant' fix somewhere out there but I have an 80Gb iPod with over 2500 songs and a dozen or so movies and with all that I'm only using about a quarter capacity, so duplicate files really havent been an issue for me]...Ok, Ringo drum roll please...look under iTunes Help---> Duplicates [Finding Duplicate Items] under the Index (where topics are conveniently arranged in alphabetical order for you) ...this will identify duplicate songs, then un-check them, then when you next Sync your iPod click the 'sync only checked items' option; you could also delete these files as well, if you choose to accept that potentially hazardous assignment--I officially disavow publicly recommending deleting files [music files that you, as an upstanding God-fearing American paid good money for, right? (how else would you get music files after all?); and music files that Apple (or any other vendor) will not replace no matter how dire your story of deleting mayhem may be] and, therefore, I will not accept any responsibility arising therefrom BUT a person could click/highlight the duplicate file(s) [use LIST VIEW and your friendly Shift Key makes selecting multiple files a snap]...you may wish to reset your iPod b4 this so you can start it from a clean slate...ALSO you are using v7.1, the menu options discussed above are from v7.3, so you may need to update to avail yourself of this functionality...I know, I know I detest the constant 'update parade' too but you have to be a big boy some times dont you? hope this helps Mike, best o' luck PS: I vaguely remember seeing a stand-alone program on the Apple site which deletes duplicate files on iTunes/iPod but that's another story sports fans

Bought one LOVE it, best smartphone ever
by ehallspqr July 4, 2007 10:27 AM PDT
I bought an iPhone Friday and have used it at least 20 hours direct hands-on.
It lives up to all the hype and then some. It does have a few issues I heard
about, but mine has worked perfectly since I activated it (took 15 min. for
mine). Don't believe all the negative envious, jealous post by Apple bashers.
They do not have an iPhone (can't afford one whaaa) or they are from
unrealistic people that want perfection, but will probably die unfulfilled and
unhappy. My advice is to go to an Apple store near you and play with one for
awhile. Ask questions and wait to see how this all plays out. It sounds like
you have a new phone so you have already made your choice? I have had
Treo's, iPaq and Casio smartphones. The iPhone is not a iPac, if you are a
business user the iPaq may be a better choice. I hated MS mobile and I don't
use all the business aps. I was using the multi media features more, videos,
MP3's, pictures etc. For these things the iPhone is hands down a better
choice. Also surfing the web, sending emails and text'ing. Way better/easier
with the iPhone. Everyone one that I know that has one (that includes a couple
Microsoft employee friends here in Seattle that will remain nameless) they all
love their iphones. Rumor is Bill Gates himself has one. Can anyone confirm
this? Wouldn't that be something. Welcome to the good side of "the force" Bill.

I love my iPod and it has proven its purchases many times over. Who wants to be connected to their phone ALL the time?

IPHONE INSANITY
by marang92 July 4, 2007 3:33 AM PDT
I THINK THE IPHONE IS COOL. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE IPHONE IS TOO EXPENSIVE AND THERE ARE TOO MANY GLITCHES. MOST PEOPLE I HAVE TALKED TO HAVE HAD PROBLEMS. ALSO, WHAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW IS AT&T(CINGULAR)WILL NOT WARRENTY THE IPHONE. APPLE WILL BE THE ONLY ONE DOING IT.

Honest review of the Iphone
by hardlumbers July 4, 2007 10:57 AM PDT
I have read most of the comments about the Iphone. I am giving you my honest opinion. I purchased the Iphone 4 days ago. I have not had any issues thus far with the phone. It is absolutely amazing. It takes some time getting used to the keyboard. Other than that the phone works great. I think the biggest hurdle to get over is the price. But in all honesty look at the price of a Blackberry with data service required for it. I think I was paying 50 a month for this data service alone. My wife has the Treo and it cost her 500 when she bought it. Who wants to carry the Ipod, cell phone and personal organizer. The Iphone has it all. I will keep you all posted as time goes on. SO FAR THE PHONE IS AMAZING AND DEFIANTELY WORTH THE MONEY. 10 OUT OF 10 SO FAR!!!!!!!!!!!

No iPhone Envy Here
by novastar July 4, 2007 11:40 AM PDT
I checked IT out on the first day. Watched a demo. I had no intention to buy, but curious. Well, I have the 30G iPod and a cell phone that is out of sight (LG VX8700)and together it is a great combination separately. My cell phone has Navigator that updates automatically and speaks the directions and recalculates as you change direction. I hear that the iPhone doesn't have this auto update feature.
If one of my dynamic duo malfunctions, I send that part back and still have the service of the other...all-in-ones have their pros, but because these are "man-made" one or the other will have a malfunction at some time.

No "I's" for me
by July 4, 2007 12:19 PM PDT
I don't do "I's" no ipod, no iphone. I have a Cingular 8125 it does everything the iphone does and it works. I haven't had any problems and it's a very useful device. It was a little expensive but if it works good and is useful. I have used most every feature on it...I wouldn't have anything else.

iPhone? Try iYawn
by Jim Harmon July 4, 2007 4:50 PM PDT
All this freakin hype over a pocket computer. It would seem as if people hadn't seen this coming for years. You'd think this device wasn't long overdue already.

I just wish browsers had real and functional filters. I'd have entered "iPhone" into it months ago.

Envy it is !!! So tired of this.
by fj2007cruiser July 5, 2007 7:27 AM PDT
I find it really amazing that everyone on this site that bashes the iPhone does NOT even own one, can't afford it, comes up with some lame excuse why they will never buy it, and most have never even touched one. Look guys (and gals). If you can't afford it please don't knock it. Nobody is twisting your arm to buy it. You will probably never get it, so it is irrelevant. Let those that did buy it, enjoy their pretty much perfect phone.
